Does anyone remember when our NAC professor/student advisor Nesar Ahmed was killed on his trip home to Pakistan - in 1986(?) ? In a "terrorist" attack against a Pan Am flight back to the states - people were machined gunned down on the plane as it sat on the runway in Karachi -Nesar was a very sweet intelligent person - he was the one who had encouraged me to study in Africa vs. Japan - "you need to go to see how most of the world lives, you should study in a peripheral country" (vs. Industrialised Japan) - I spoke with him when he was planning his first trip back to Pakistan after many years - he was excited about visiting his family but a little bit apprehensive re: the politics there - he had socialist leanings and was close friends with Benazir Bhutto who was in charge at the time - anyway he never made it back to the states from his trip - he left behind his wife and little girl - I am concerned about terrorism however I'm super concerned about all the terroists we're creating by unjustly detaining people and blowing up their countries - how do you all feel about traveling to other countries @ this time ? as an American -

Oh my gosh, what a sad story... I'd never heard that.

I would love to travel, and if I had the money to do it I'd be out and about for sure.

I do notice that my ESOL students have a much harder time getting into the country than the old days, and they're all (every single one) required to have a retinal scan in addition to the regular fingerprints and tons of paperwork and all. It's creepy because the retina scan is to go along with the recognition software cameras so that they can recognize them from a good distance, even in a disguise. (theoretically, I don't know if the government can afford much of that).
I thought it was odd when they started telling me "The CIA is watching us!" I figured they'd just seen too many spy movies. But... yikes. It just seems like each month we get a liiiitle bit closer to Orwell's imagined 1984.

Yes it was a very sad situation and he was amazing. Travelling is more important now than ever. Terrorism? I presume one means "Islamic fundamentalist attacks" when they say that, especially in North America. Travelling in Muslim countries will exhilerate and fascinate you, just as travelling in other areas will. The world is diverse and the threat of terrorism against you is small but hugely blown out of proportion by your very crazy neo-con government to make you afraid. Jingoism will not solve the world's problems. You all will. Go out and explore your earth.
