I was thinking of Marla after my sister-in-law told me a story. My nephew goes to a school, where probably 60% of the students are from military families based at Fort Lewis. His teacher assigned them to write a letter to a sevice man in Iraqi. His letter was sent home, and my sister-in-law read it to me. He told the soldier he felt sorry for him and that he wished he could be home with his family. THen he went on to say that his uncle had lost a friend in Iraqi, who died from a bomb as she was counting innocent people killed in Iraqi. I had only told him the story of Marla once, when he asked me how my trip to Chile was. I told him it was good, but that I had lost a good friend during the trip and how she had died. He had remembered that for the last 6 months and included it in his letter to the service man. THat was my little Marla reminder this week, she is still alive in the world even if she is physically gone.

Marla would have been 29 on December 31st. She would want us all to drink a beer in her memory.

Don't forget to buy one for her too and drink it for her.

My adopted brother was Native American and he went back to live with his birth family, where he died a year ago. The night before his funeral there was lots of food and everyone talked about him and remembered him as they sat around the fire. They served up food on a plate for him and opened a beer and gave him cigarettes. After everyone talked they put his food and cigs and beer in the fire so he could have them where he was now. It's very traditional, but I thought it was a good way to give nice things to the dead... as smoke. But maybe he would have been just as happy for one of us to have drunk the beer. I don't know.
