I just heard about a Dia de Mexicanos this Monday. The plan is for a nationwide work strike by Mexican immigrants. It would be pretty interesting to see that play out.

For SURE. Did anyone else see 'A Day Without a Mexican'? (I'm pretty sure that's what it was called.) It was a little fantastical with the magic fog and all, but the premise was really interestiing.

Yea, a day without a mexican is a funny movie. But the 10th isn't just a day for Mexicans, its a "Day without immigrants" with the same idea as the day without a Mexican movie (well, not that everyone disappears, but) that it would be a nationwide strike of immigrant workers to draw attention to a group of people that are the mostly silent, but have a huge impact on the running of this country. Not much is happening in OHio that I know of on the 10th except for a panel discussion at a college in the Cincinnati area, but that's because folks already had a big thing planned for the 12th, and didn't want to get people confused

I'd love to hear what is happening in you alls states, see pics etc.

We had a rally in Columbus last weekend and it drew thousands (the paper reported 3,000, the parks service which oversees the statehouse lawn estimated the # to be 7,000)

Eighth grader Anthony Soltero shot himself through the head

          EducationNews.org

On Thursday, March 30, after the assistant principal at De Anza Middle
School told him that he was going to prison for three years because of
his involvement as an organizer of the April 28 school walk-outs to
protest the anti-immigrant legislation in Washington. The vice
principal also forbade Anthony from attending graduation activities and
threatened to fine his mother for Anthony's truancy and participation
          in the student protests.

"Anthony was learning about the importance of civic duties and rights
in his eighth grade class. Ironically, he died because the vice
principal at his school threatened him for speaking out and exercising
those rights," Ms. Corales said today.

"I want to speak out to other parents, whose children are attending
the continuing protests this week. We have to let the schools know that
they can't punish our children for exercising their rights."

Anthony's death is likely the first fatality arising from the protests
against the immigration legislation being considered in Washington,
D.C. Anthony, who was a very good student at De Anza Middle School in
the Ontario-Montclair School District, believed in justice and was
          passionate about the immigration issue.

He is survived by his mother, Louise Corales, his father, a younger
sister, and a baby brother. Ms. Corales will speak to the community
after mass on Sunday, April 9, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of
Guadalupe Church. She will ask for a prayer for Anthony, whose funeral
and burial are scheduled for Monday, April 10 in Long Beach, where he
          was born.

          • Holy shit! that's so horrible.

I went to the April 10 rally today in Pensacola. I was impressed at the turnout, since this is a very very non-progressive area (there aren't any Planned Parenthoods here because of all the death threats they got, and so called 'Intelligent Design' is taken really seriously- plus you can hear awful slurs coming out of the mouths of otherwise normal-seeming people).
NPR said there were 1000 people. Most of the rally was in Spanish so I didn't understand that much, but I marched around with everyone for a while and tried to lend my support. There was one woman there with a little sign that said "Show me your green card" who would yell that phrase whenever the organizers started talking on the bullhorn. Of course I couldn't think of anything to do at the time but glare at her, but I all the way home I was thinking "does she think that's not what they want? Does she think it's so easy?" I was just wishing that everyone could have the opportunity we've had to live in another country and see how alien being an "alien" really feels. I think there would be a lot more empathy in the world for a lot of things. Anyone who thinks that immigration is lazy or taking the easy way out should try it for themselves.
            • Oh the irony,
Many of the immigrants from central america have indiginous roots to the americas, and then you have some white woman asking for a piece of paper to prove that they should be here. I am amazed at how little press this is getting, middle class white americans are so stupid, have they not realized that their bush administration has helped propel the policies which have put them in the situation they are in. Why are we required to go to High school in this country if we never learn anything, like basic economics (people would not come here if there were no avalible jobs), politics (If we really wanted to borders closed, it could be done, we invaded a souverign nation for chirst sake, we need immigrants to fill jobs in this country or out economy would fail) and history (Texas, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah were all once part of Spanish Mexico, borders and populations change on a regular basis and will continue to do so). Americans need to learn to adapt or they will be left behind the times.
              • Brett, I think it is getting quite a bit of press, at least in Ohio, but not the kind of indepth analysis that would help people understand WHY the protests, WHY the fight in congress etc. It just leaves people to their own, often biggoted, reactions to seeing hundreds of thousands of brown people marching in the streets. There are some real champions in congress that have come out strongly telling of their immigrant roots, and how their families came here "illegally" and now they are members of Congress.
                • No I have seen the press coverage, it was just the tone of it all. seemed like the press made it sound like the noticed people in the streets, but were not quite sure why and never once even tried to briefly explain the situation. People just don't protest for no reason, they really have to be motivated. It seemed like the press was unable to grasp that.
