New Director of Alumni Relations

Hello All!

Reading through the posts here, I felt like I might have something you'd all be interested in. My name is Sarah Martin, and I graduated in May 2007. I am working at World Headquarters this summer, and likely again next Spring, taking this time to sort out where I go next and to enjoy the journey there.

I thought you might be interested to know that Global College (our newest Friends World incarnate) has hired a director of alumni relations, a position that, to my knowledge, has never existed at Friends World before. Her name is Sara Purcell, and she is really an excellent individual. She just started, but is already beginning to think of ways to form a proper alumni association seperate from the LIU machine.

I've given her a good amount of input- what I gather to be the 'alumni' pulse. I've tried to do a fair job representing a portion of our interests in my meetings with Sara. Chief among them, I felt, was that all previous incarnations of Friends World be recognized and that none be ignored- that the alumni association recognizes us as Friends World College or Friends World Program graduates, and that the newest class of students be recognized, in time, as Global College alumni. I've expressed to her the amount of disappointment I myself felt, as well as the alumni I know felt, and many of the posts indicated here that the wider community of alumni felt, when the name changed so suddenly, abruptly, and with little community dialogue.

I'll be snooping around on this tribe site regularly, so if you have questions about exactly what is cooking here at World Headquarters, regarding the alumni association, or things generally, just reply to this post and I'll be happy to answer them as best as I can.

Take Care,

Sarah Martin

I know other people feel differently, but I personally really hate the name change. I feel totally disconnected from the school.People ask me where I went to college constantly, and for the last few months I have been telling them that it doesn't exist anymore. I am having a hard time understanding what about "Global College" is similar to FW, in any of it's incarnations but the very most recent, and I only graduated in 1999. It wasn't *that* long ago.

Keep it on the D.L., but I strongly dislike the name change, too. Working here now, I am ok with saying Global College to new, incoming students, but when people ask me to talk about my experience, I can't do it. Just can't. I went to Friends World, end of story. I find myself getting really angry sometimes in my work when new students (without knowing better) ask me about my time at "Global College", etc. It's personal with me. At the same time, though, the name has been changed, and I want people to know that this program exists... I want our little program to survive.

I think it's a little much to say that this program is nothing like what it was, and is just another cheesy study abroad program. It certainly isn't, and if it ever becomes as such, then that's it for me. As you can see from some of the current student postings on this site (like the petition that went out, for example), we're still a bunch of passionate activists with wanderlust that seek to initiate social change. This program still attracts those with a deep curiosity about the world and a strong impulse to change things for the better. I disagree with many of the changes, but at the heart of it I would rather see Global College than no program like this at all.

As for South Africa, I think it's a better place than London for the study of peace and reconciliation (my area of concentration). The peace process there is alive and ongoing, and it offers an important example of one way to help reconcile a society with its violent past. The center will be located in Durban, not J'berg or Cape Town.

I see our role as alumni in these coming years as important- we will be the ones who provide a link to the past, and ensure that the core ethos of our program- Quaker principles of experiential learning, conscientious global citizenship, and the creation of agents of positive social change remain. It's just like it was with newbie graduates like me- there were the old school Friends Worlders still in the program that had been to Jerusalem and Ghana, there were the old school Friends World College alumns that popped up from time to time... there's even been a couple of Friends World Institute professors that I have run into during my time as a student. The worst disservice we could do to our school, I think, it to completely ignore it.

Just some thoughts on this grey Tuesday...

This is GREAT to read, Sarah.

Seriously, you've just renewed my faith a lot in one post. It's hard for us alums to know what's going on and what the climate is, we get very little "real" information and you know how rumors go...
It seemed like people were saying that the new direction was going to be to only have centers in countries that were on the "almost developed" end of the "developing country" spectrum so that students would have language and cultural skills for business. Now that you're saying South Africa for peace and reconciliation, it sounds like a very good choice.

PLEASE keep us posted during your tenure there! Just from time to time, or if you have something pressing. It's good to have a conscientious contact on the inside. I know I personally feel invested in what happens to/within the school, and I know others do too.

        Keep up the good work.

Yes it is a little sad to see what has happened to FW. I went to FW for the places I could go, I love going to places right on the edge, the countries where no tourists go since there isn't much there of interest to them. That was part of the excitment of it. I am a little upset by the name change, I feel like a generic brand school (remember the brand that was just white boxes with black letters, like that). Africa is one of the places where no one goes it seems, while in Kenya, other students we met were amazed we had a center in a community we had a tie to for over 30 years. That was lost and I don't think we can ever get it back. Latin Amercia was a great center too, I a was very happy to get an internship in Boliva though, as it was a bit more interesting than Costa Rica. I hope the India center is still open, Bangalore is a great town to work out of since it is the rapidly growing urban setting, something we will see a lot of in the coming decades. I hope the communities are strong too, that was really what made FW for me, my fellow classmates who have become dear friends. The 5 hour long community meetings, where you leave either super frustrated or completely empowered. No one understand you better than another FWer, no matter how hard they try. Well my unconnected rambling is done.
