I've put the new name and logo in the photos section of the tribe. Following is the letter from the Dean forwarded to the fw-alumni list.

To: The Friends World Community
From: Robert Glass, Dean
Re: Change of name
Date: Monday, December 18, 2006

Following the discussion at the meeting of the Council of Overseers on
November 11, 2006, the Clerk/Chair Valentine Titus submitted a list of
six possible new names to the Officers of Long Island University. (The
difficulty of deciding on a specific name is reflected in the Overseers'
decision to submit a total of six names, rather than just three.)

I am pleased to announce that the University has chosen one of the
Overseer's proposed names as the new name for the Friends World Program.
This name change will be reflected in marketing materials published for
the new recruiting season beginning in February 2007.

Please see the attached logo.

Thanks to the Council of Overseers for all their work on this over the
past six months. Thanks as well to students and alumni who wrote in with
their opinions on the issue.

Seasons Greetings to all,

Robert

    1. I sort of can't believe we landed the "college" designation, but I'm very happy about that. It's something we've been (sometimes literally) fighting for since 1990.

    2. I have mixed feelings about losing the "Friends" designation. I don't think it's been any obstacle to recruitment, but I don't think losing it will pose any obstacle either. The challenges there have very little to do with names, IMHO (more to with praxis and truth).

    3. I'm one of the ones who prefer "Global" to "international," so I'm OK with that.

    4. I'm very very happy that for once, our logo isn't centered on North America.

    5. I'm still unhappy about the process by which we came to the new name, as outlined elsewhere.

      OH MY GOD, NO!!!!!!

Sorry, I'm not trying to be reactionary, but I really do feel like my college is now gone. I think it has to do with praxis, truth, and THE NAME. I know I sure am not going to recommend a school to someone that has not one of the centers, buildings, or teachers that I knew (only 7 years ago) and now, not even the name? Not that I was super attatched to Southampton, but everything/everyone else...

It just doesn't seem like the same school. Maybe I'll get used to it, but right now that's how I feel.

I have to say I disagree with you as well, Jonathan. We merged with LIU sometime ago out of necessity and now we are LIU. I suppose this was inevitable considering the circumstances but I cannot imagine the students at the time wanted to be LIU students. And I would argue that removing "Friends World" may in deed prove detrimental to the advertising of this program. After all, so many of we students came to be at Friends World through word of mouth but now that "Friends World" no longer exists the alumni and current students may not be useful in spreading the word. Though, I would say this is not only an effect of the name change but of overall changes to the program. As a student with five semesters still to go, I am extremely ambiguous about what my future with this college, program, whatever it is, holds for me. My assumptions are that the reality for the students coming in the Fall of 2007 will be quite different from even my experience and certainly unrecognizable in comparison to Friends World College. And that all I can do is to continue to sequester as much academic freedom as I can during my time in Friends World (which it will always remain to me) until the day I am cut off. On that day I will simply need to choose my next path! Though I am anguished to think that day may in deed come and that perhaps the incoming students will not even get the chance to experience it. As a side note: I was confused by your mention of the logo not being centered over North America. I have never seen Friends World propaganda centered only over North America. I would say it is slightly disconcerting that the logo is centered over Asia. There has been a swing towards Asian centers with the closure of the London Center. I am more keen on the logo on this tribe webpage with the center in the middle of the pacific because I figure if one found the geographical center between each of the centers it would probably fall in the middle of the pacific, right? With all that said I do, however, agree with your last note. I certainly do not feel content with the manner by which the name came to change or the manner by which any of the changes have been made. But what can I say I am a woman of many opinions and much still to learn.

          Respectfully,
          Tina

I too feel that the school I went to is gone. It is ten years for me, but still. To think that every center I went to is gone every director, every teacher, every staff member. To think of all of the restrictions this new curriculum places on incoming students and now the name is gone too. It truly feels like Friends World is no more. Not only that but the way that the decision was made with some vague process of half truths. I will not be recommending the school nor will I make any donations. For now at least. Maybe never. I can't help feeling though that there is a plus to all of this. If the powers that be are content with destroying Friends World as we knew it at least the name is free. Maybe some entrepreneurial alumni with grant writing skills will find a way to start a new Friends World College. I always thought that the school should have been run by alumni who knew what the experience was like and could be more inciteful, more helpful then many of the advisor's we had.
