Since then one was opened in Ghana for a few years and I think now there is one in South Africa, but it would have only opened in the past year. The program has change a lot in the last 5 years as it has in the last 40.
Hey, I am an FWC (Huntington Campus) hand. Started in 1985 and graduated in 1990. Went to the LAC and the EAC in China while it was still in the Northeast of China. It is cool to read about older and newer attendees but much better still to see that there are like minded people still out there. Suffice it to say, students in my time were not pleased when the Huntington campus closed down. Fortunately, for me that is, I missed the "tough" years by a few semesters. It seems like the "college" is in for yet another transtion, which my cynical self has to predict will result in yet another watering down of the original mission. And how useful a mission it still is in today's world.

I'd love to hear from anyone from the mid-eighties to early nineties years. When I started at FWC, Reagan had just invaded Grenada, the Sandinistas were in power in Nicaragua and the Iran-Contra Scandal was a couple of years away. I spent about a year and a half in the LAC - travelled throughout Central America - interned in Nicaragua, fell in love with Guatemala and then headed back up to the USA for a brief stint taking classes at a local college and saving towards my second overseas program ---China.

Spent three years in the Northeast of mainland and witnessed from within the beginning, middle and end of the Tiananmen demonstrations. Very interesting experiences. Much more to tell about the whole China experience for anyone that is truly interested.

Yes, FWC was a fantastic phase in life and certainly a eye opening, life altering experience. I hope it remains true to its cause and manages this newest transition well.

Hope to hear from like minded "wandering scholars"!!! Fernando

I think it's really sad that there's nothing in Kenya any more. And SOUTH AFRICA? for real? I mean I'm sure it's a great place with lots to study- but if that is FW's only center in Africa, that's pretty wack. As I understand it, the original FW classes traveled as a group to "wherever there was the most need" but the recent center closings and openings seem to lean heavily away from poverty and need and towards places that will appeal to international business students. It seems like FW was a school for learning about other cultures and social justice, with lots of freedoms and variety, and maybe "Global College" is going to be just like all of the other cheesy abroad programs.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Sarah Martin, and I recently graduated from FW this May (2007). I went to the LAC, the EC, and the NAC. I also completed 5 independent semesters, one in Cuba, one in Northern Ireland, one in London (the semester after the EC closed I refused to leave), and two in Lithuania. Should you know me, you'd remember that I'm well into coffee, cigarettes, books, movies, Irish men, and anything having to do with the former Soviet Union.

My biggest gripe (coz it's fun to gripe to fellow FW'ers) is the closing of the European center and the lack of any initiative to open a new one. I'm happy that we will be getting a new center in South Africa in Spring 2008.

I'm love to find Ian Hefele (last I knew, he was peace corp'ing in Mozambique), Chris Penny (my awesome advisor in London who seems to have disappeared), and any of the others I haven't talked to for two + years.

Final bit- I'm currently working at World Headquarters until September 14, and will be again starting April 2008-August 2008. If anyone has questions about current going-ons, please let me know.

Take Care,

Hello.I attended FWC in 1966-67, its second year. I became very ill in Mexico in the spring of 1967, and was unable to continue with the program. Instead, I set out to fulfill a promise
to the people of the little village in Tlaxcala where I did my work project.
I was the youngest student then, 17 years old. At that time, Morris' daughter had alsio just gone off to college and I reminded him of her. We became close. I stayed over at the Big House often, having long talks
about his vision for the college. He had a big vision about what Friends World College was about, and knew that even the faculty for the most part could not share this with him.
Years later I met a woman named Ana Edy from Martha's Vineyard. When she spoke of what she had been doing for years all over the world regarding unique water resources, I felt she was doing exactly what Morris envisioned could come out of an education at Friends World College.
She went and found out ways people all over the world were applying low tech technologies to create fresh water sources. Each approach was something that could be done by any other culture without a lot of money and technology, from converting waste to potable water and converting sea water to fresh drinking water simply. Then she shared
all of these projects in a book she put together .
Morris saw student being able to do what she did take something being done in one culture and make that possible for another.
In reality, this vision was far beyond the reality of young people adjusting to dramatically different cultures climates and languages one after another. Nonetheless, I felt its depth, and how everything Morris had done until then led up to his feeling that vision could make a real difference in the world.

Hello and Greetings! My name is Chris Doyle and I was at Friends World College from 1988-92, that's right, the really transitional years. It seems that we were constantly in community meetings, and constantly fighting with the board who was being led at that time by one of Huntington, New York's premier real estate developers (uummmm, wonder why he wanted his hands on the bay property of the old campus?) Those were memorable times, trying times and hard times, but we did have some fun playing some good jokes on the adminstration. Boy, that last year at Huntington was like a guerilla war!!
After graduating in '92 I returned to the Middle East in '93 and just got back to the US a few months ago. I've been working in development mainly, especially in some of the refugee camps in the West Bank, all over Egypt and most recently on the Jordan/Iraqi border. I'm married now for almost 11 years to a Palestinian from Bethlehem and we have two sons, two dogs and very possibly soon to have two ferrets as well. I am now the director of the Multi-Cultural Family Center in Dubuque, Iowa and planning on going back to school next fall -- then we do plan to get out of here and return home to the Middle East.
It's taken a while to get over the incredibly frustrating and hurt feelings of those last years with everything that happened, it really ripped people apart. But I would love to hear from people again. Be in touch!

Hello. I am so glad to have found this site. Someone alerted me to it with an email, and I thank them!
I transferred from McGill to the South Asia Center in January '96 and stayed for a year before heading to the MEC in January '97. I studied there for a semester and then dropped out and lived on a kibbutz for a while. I eventually graduated from Evergreen in 2000, and after a short break working at nonprofits, going to herb school in Bisbee, AZ, and learning Kichwa in Ecuador, I then went on to graduate school at University of Pennsylvania and graduated last May. Now I live in Jamaica Plain, MA with my husband and our 5 year old hound dog Moshe and work with the Small Planet Institute in Cambridge (smallplanetinstitute.org).
Going to Friends World was such an empowering time in my life - we had complete responsibility for what we learned. I am so grateful for having that experience. I would love to connect with people I knew then. Besides running into Yishai at a Zakir Hussein Concert in Jerusalem many years ago, and occasional emails to Isaiah I have not heard from anybody since I left the program. Is Mimi Hassimi or Julie Furhman out there?

I found this "tribe" by Googling "Friends World College." Don't even recall why I did it. I remember doing it from time to time when the web was young, back in the mid-90s, and turning up all sorts of individuals who had it on their resumes, etc. Right now it's #8 in the list, so on the first page of search results.

If people want to keep it there, it would help to make links from various websites, linking to the FW tribe front page at http://friendsworld.tribe.net/ with the phrase "Friends World College and Friends World Program" in the link.

I think people tend to fluctuate in their interest in Friends World. It's a phase thing, in a cycle of maybe 10-15 years, and probably everyone here ought to get used to the idea because there *will* be a phase when you're really not interested, and then you want to be open to the possibility that later you'll start to wonder what's up with it these days. Take my word for it.

"Build it and they will come" is the right attitude. Doesn't always pay off, but that's the only way anything really gets done.

I would *love* to see more FWers from some of the original classes, that's part of why we put this together. We tried, we sent this link out a few times to the alumni list and tried to canvass every email we found in the FW newsletter. We got mostly recentish grads, but I would love to have a mix of folks from all the years and current students. Now it's sort of a "we built it, we hope they come" kind of thing.

I joined in 1976. At the time, I thought I'd get "transfer" credit for my experience in San Francisco the previous two years, so I skipped the standard first-year program and went directly overseas to the center in Aylsham, England (north of Norwich), and from there to Portugal for my first project. Came back to England in 1978 for my second year, worked with various periodicals, and returned to the US in 1979 with two years credit.

Took a year off, then rejoined in Kenya. Based in Nairobi, I took off in various directions -- North East Province, western Kenya, and then on an 8-week trip thru Uganda (recently freed from Idi Amin!) to Tanzania (at that time, the border with Kenya was closed), thru Zambia to Zimbabwe (recently gained majority rule), and back to Kenya (managed to get a pass directly back into Kenya, or I don't know what I would have done as Uganda was pretty rocky). Wrote a lot of journal and several pieces for publication.

Then I got the job of student executive, 1981-82, and after that spent 6-8 months helping out on campus and writing a history of FWC. Well, sort of a history, sort of a compilation of a lot of things that people had been writing about Friends World over the years, and sort of a meditation on the dynamics of FW-style "experiential education." It felt like the school was going through a major transition, mostly for the better. The attitude was that the past had been too flakey and with a little more professionalism and a little less seat-of-the-pants inmates-running-the-asylum, the school could do a bit better.

Well, I moved to New York and stayed in touch with FW for the next decade or so, through to the turnover to LIU. In '85-86, I went to Japan for a year, took the EAC orientation and language classes, and hung out in Kyoto. Then I started sociology studies in Philadelphia, finishing A.b.D. (all but the dissertation) in 1996 or so.

I'm happily married, working in webdesign, and part of the community in West Philadelphia. In the last ten years or so I've gotten a lot more interested in Quaker history, and I've built up a website at http://www.strecorsoc.org. One of these days, I'll get the history I wrote of FWC up on the web.

I got turned off by the way that LIU wanted to run our alumni group, so I haven't been involved in that since 1993 or so. I am curious, though, if anyone here has experience with that recently. There are a lot of really good folks from the stretch of time since 1965 (1963, actually, was the first organized program), and back in the day it was good to get together to compare notes.

A lot of us left at the end of that year as the situation with FWC was so uncertain, and within a few years I lost touch with everyone I knew there... sadly, as I really liked a lot of those people. I am back in the US now - in Atlanta. Where is everyone? I know that Lorna is still in Kenya (married to George and with a beautiful daughter), Kathryn is in Florida, also a mom and doing great. But I would love news of others.

I'm still here on eastern LI - involved in a few political things and some other things that just make me feel good. Horses, nature and work quite close to Quail Hill.

After I left FW (and perhaps because the WAY I left, I haven't heard from too many people - but a few....Josh Moore became a part of my family (so he HAD to stay in touch) and Brett, Lori NOW Fasolino and Tony...and, of course, Brett. He's the one that told me about this website and Friendsters - although aside from you, Brett...it seems fairly sleezy...basically a hook-up, dating site (don't you think?)

Devatstated by the recent US election; just can't believe the way things are going - but doing the best I can.
